Liz Truss Resigns as UK Prime Minister

Britain's Shortest-Serving Leader to Step Down After 45 Days

Tory Leadership Election to Commence

Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom after just 45 days in office, triggering the second Tory leadership election in four months.

Truss announced her resignation outside Downing Street, saying that she could not deliver on the mandate on which she was elected.

"I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party," Truss said.

Truss's resignation follows a tumultuous period in office, marked by economic turmoil and political instability. Her government's mini-budget announcement in September sparked widespread market panic, leading to the resignation of her Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng.

Truss's successor will be elected by Conservative Party members. The election is expected to be held within the next month.
