Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her father was Jamaican and her mother was Indian.

Harris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Harris began her political career in 2003 when she was elected as District Attorney of San Francisco.
